Gold plating: what to confirm before quotation
The right thickness depends on product geometry, wear expectations, protective coating, target price and the brand's quality promise.
Compare complete specifications
When requesting options such as 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 or 1.0 μm, ask the supplier to state the nominal thickness, measurement method and tolerance for each quote. Keep the same base material, color, protective coating and quantity when comparing prices. A thickness figure alone is not a guarantee of wear life.
Request an approval reference
Ask for a physical sample or agreed color reference, the intended use and care instructions, and any project-specific test requirements. Have the selected specification recorded in the quotation and order before production.
Start with the product and market
Plating thickness alone is not a complete measure of durability. Base preparation, polishing, barrier layers, the gold deposit, protective coating and wear conditions all influence performance.
Confirm the specification in writing
Record the base metal, plating color, nominal thickness, nickel requirements, protective finish, testing method and approved sample as the production reference.
